In AdS/CFT the membrane paradigm has been extremely important in finding universal features of strongly coupled gauge theories. In some circumstances we show that while there is no background horizon in the spacetime we are studying, a horizon emerges in the open string description of probe D-branes, thus allowing us to define an emergent, open string membrane paradigm and study the phenomenology of gauge theories in the presence of background fields. This simplifies greatly the calculation of certain transport properties which would otherwise need ugly numerical methods for their study.
